Couple Fall 80 Feet While Taking Selfie Atop Waterfall — And Only One Survived
A couple met a tragic and, for one, deadly fate while touring Bali over the weekend.
On Sunday, Giancarlo Zicari, 49, and his girlfriend Ilaria Biagi, 25, set out to visit the Gajah Mas waterfalls in Indonesia above the Villa Gajah Mas. The Tabanan Police Public Relations Chief Gusti Made Berata detailed the couple’s trajectory in a press release:
“At around 11:15 a.m., the couple continued their journey to the waterfall, located about 500 meters below the villa. They reached a terrace with two wooden chairs and an iron fence created specifically to prevent visitors from falling.”
However, the iron fence did anything BUT that.

According to local police reports, Giancarlo was attempting to take a selfie with Ilaria with the waterfall in the background when the fence they were leaning on gave out, sending them plummeting over 82 feet down the fall. And sadly, Giancarlo did not survive the fall. Chief Gusti added:
“The victim is suspected to have died after falling from the area of the villa waterfall in Gajah Mas, approximately 25 meters high.”
Local outlet La Stampa reported Ilaria miraculously survived the fall and was aided by good samaritan Sokoliuk Viktoria, who was staying at the villa at the time, before being rushed to the Baturiti Health Center in Tabanan.
Giancarlo’s body was recovered and his family is said to have refused an autopsy as they have “accepted the tragedy as an accident.”
So awful.
His relatives are currently arranging for his body to be returned to Italy where he lived.
Our hearts are with all of his loved ones and we hope to see Ilaria recover quickly. Rest in peace.
